The small things in your life are sometimes the most important. It’s often the small things in a relationship which add up to the big, beautiful picture. It’s sort of the same with the rest of life as well.
When I say the small things, I mean Looking at the world as you walk through it, talking to people for no reason at all, or making a really nice breakfast. These are the things that matter, because if you’re always looking for the ‘future dream life’, you won’t live a happy life. Let me explain..
Many people think that if they could just get ‘that one perfect job’ or ‘that perfect body’ then everything would be amazing and they’d be ‘sooo happy’. Well, the truth is a lot colder than that. The happiness is within you, the whole time. Now people reading this will either agree with me, or say things like ‘I don’t need this hippie rubbish about the happiness within etc’.
Now, it does sound too good to be true, but it really is that simple. Enjoy the small things in life, because life is made up of lots of small things. It’s a continuous experience of ‘now’, you’re at the precipice of this dance we call life, and to pin all your happiness and hopes on some big ‘future event’ that might never happen, is pretty stupid.
Don’t misunderstand this, having goals is VERY important and everyone should look to the future with love and hope, to work towards something, but don’t get so caught up in the end result that you ignore the journey.
Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination
Sure, it’s nice to know where you’re going, hell it’s even essential to know where you’re going, but don’t forget the act of getting there. The actual journey you embark on, as this is, for the most part, where you fully experience life. That’s all life really is: a journey.. Think about the most important people in your life, other than your family.
The people you love that you weren’t born knowing, so your partner, or your friends. How did you meet them? How did they come into your life? By joining you on your journey.. whether it’s through bumping into them on a night out, or traveling and making a new friend you’ve met these people through your journey of life.
Now what does this have to do with the small things? Well, we’re getting there. Stay with me.
Enjoy the little things
It’s fair to say that life is made up of moments, it’s a long string of memories. Some of your experiences impact your life more than others, for example if you traveled to Lanzarote and experienced a live volcano, that may impact your life more than say, walking down to the park, right?
Yes, of course, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the walk in the park! So many people do most of their daily tasks on autopilot, roll out of bed, make some breakfast and jump in the car to go to work.
If you remember one thing from this post, try and enjoy the small things in your life. Take a little bit longer in the bath to fully relax. Spend a few hours playing your favorite video game, or put your feet up and listen to some music. Whatever you enjoy in life, do more of it and try to savor the little moments many of us just stumble through like a zombie.
